Burnley’s Prairie Sports Village the latest venture for synthetic…
A Lancashire leisure complex is to be the latest proud owner of European Golf’s premier artificial surfaces.
Prairie Sports Village in Burnley is currently having its bespoke golfing requirements met by the company’s dedicated team of professional installers.
The complex, which is owned by registered charity Burnley Leisure, has placed an order which will put them at the forefront of artificial golf turf provision in the East Lancashire area.
Once the works are completed, they will be able to offer the following to the region’s golfers:
- An 18m x 15m synthetic putting green with a minimum of six different pin positions
- A chipping green with a minimum of four different pin positions and a minimum of four chipping mat positions
- Two 4m-long bunkers adjacent to the chipping green
- Nine 2m wide mini-golf holes, of between 7m and 12m in length
Each area will offer golfers a near-realistic performance as European Golf’s artificial turf replicates the speed of the ball on natural grass – but without the costly and time-consuming maintenance.
Preparation
Preparation for the golfing area has involved completely levelling the existing surface. The proposed bunkers have also been excavated.
A geo-tex membrane was then laid across the entire area and any props and features, such as bridges on the holes, were been installed.
The contours of the greens have been formed using stone sized between 20mm-40mm, to an average depth of eight inches.
Dust material will also be added. This will help compact the base and give a smooth surface that is tamped by hand to finish.
Any low spots have been identified using laser levels before being treated.
The holes will then be located and cut into the base before European Golf’s premier turf is laid and cut into shape.
Seams will then be glued as the synthetic grass is fitted and fixed into place and silica spread is distributed evenly across the green.
Finally, the site is cleaned before being considered complete – and what’s more, it will be in an instantly useable condition!
Materials
The overhaul of the entire golfing area at Prairie Sports Village will make use of an estimated 160 tonnes of Type 1 aggregate.
Granite stone and 4mm dust weighing in at 40 tonnes will also be used.
Combined, they’ll be covered with 476m2 of European Golf’s finest synthetic turf.
Edging the greens and holes will be stones, timber sleepers and 40 tonnes of bark and gravel.
Reaction
Josh Bartlett, managing director of European Golf, said: “We’re thrilled to be given the opportunity to provide this facility.
“Burnley Leisure is a tremendous venture and we’re proud that its golfing area will be a European Golf project,” he added.
