European Golf deliver at Burnley’s Prairie Sports Village

  • 28th October 201610th July 2023

A Lancashire leisure complex (Burnley’s Prairie Sports Village) is the latest proud owner of European Golf’s premier artificial surfaces.

Prairie Sports Village in Burnley has had its bespoke golfing requirements met by the company’s dedicated team of professional installers.

The complex, which is owned by registered charity Burnley Leisure, placed an order which put them at the forefront of artificial golf turf provision in the East Lancashire area.

Following the completion of the works, they are now able to offer the following practice aids to the region’s golfers:

• A nine-hole mini-golf course which replicates nine famous holes from courses around the world
• A 100 m2 short game practice green, which can be used for either chip or bunker shots
• A 220m2 putting green

Each area of premium synthetic turf will offer golfers a near-realistic performance as it replicates the speed of the ball on natural grass – but without the costly and time-consuming maintenance.

Preparation

Preparation for the golfing area firstly involved creating correct levels for the site, following on from its previous use as a tipping site for soil from a previous project.

After spending two weeks removing more than 600 tonnes of earth, the levelling was achieved and the building process could begin.

The short game practice green was the first facility to be built. Measuring seven metres wide by 12 metres long, the green has four different pin positions all with different contours.

It also features a deep face bunker, a pop bunker and a flat plateau which is used for the chipping area. This section of the green makes use of our Tee Line product which replicates a tight fairway lie.

The rest of the short game practice green was made using our Tour Pro Infill surface. A special form of silica sand used in the preparation of the green makes sure that balls react on it just as they would on natural turf.

Next to be manufactured was Prairie Sports Village’s order of a putting green, which consists of seven different pin positions. This section of the complex’s golf offering also features large contours but, because of its size, can also offer long and flat areas for precise putting.

The putting green uses European Golf’s Tour Putt Ultimate artificial surface, which stimps at a consistent 9.2.

Both the putting green and the short game practice green are surrounded by our Tour Pro Fringe product, which gives them a pleasing aesthetic and makes the whole area look as one.

However, the centrepiece of Prairie Sports Village’s new golf offering is undoubtedly the nine-hole mini-golf course.

Based around nine holes from famous golf clubs around the world, the course was designed to replicate the fun of playing some of the most recognisable challenges that the sport has to offer.

Each hole has realistic features consistent with their real-life inspiration. Bunkers, water hazards and boulders all feature – as does the famous bridge from the 18th hole at St Andrews.

European Golf has also included the same undulations and contours from the famous courses to give Lancashire’s golfers as realistic an experience as possible.

Materials

Different products have been used for each of the three separate areas, to represent the different usage for each facility.

Reaction

Josh Bartlett, managing director of European Golf, said: “We’re thrilled with the finished product at Burnley’s Prairie Sports Village.

“The order has enabled us to highlight our versatility in offering solutions for any scenario.

“We have extensive knowledge in base construction, groundwork’s and laying key surfaces in the right areas. As well as this, our creativity in designing and delivering the project shows how European Golf is the premier choice for your synthetic turf needs,” he added.
